COTABATO PROVINCE — A senior leader of the extremist group Dawlah Islamiyah–Hassan Group was killed during a military operation conducted before dawn on Sunday, March 8, in Barangay Tinimbacan, Banisilan, authorities said.

The fatality was identified as Emarudin Kulaw, also known by the alias “Alpha King,” who was considered the second-highest ranking leader of the group. Kulaw previously served as Amir of the organization before assuming the role of sub-leader, according to security officials.

The operation was carried out by troops of the 601st Infantry (Unifier) Brigade and the 602nd Infantry (Liberator) Brigade under the Joint Task Force Central, led by Jose Vladimir R. Cagara, commander of the 6th Infantry Division of the Philippine Army.

Military authorities said Kulaw was killed after encountering government troops during the decisive operation in the remote village. Following the clash, soldiers conducted clearing operations in the area and recovered an M653 rifle believed to have been used by the suspect.

The operation was confirmed by the Western Mindanao Command (WESMINCOM), which said the neutralization of Kulaw dealt a significant blow to the operations of the Dawlah Islamiyah–Hassan Group in Central Mindanao.

Authorities described Kulaw as a high-value individual due to his alleged involvement in several violent incidents in the region. He was reportedly facing multiple criminal charges, including multiple attempted murder, destructive arson, violation of the Anti-Terrorism Act, and double murder, along with other related offenses.

Major General Cagara said the successful operation demonstrates the government’s continuing commitment to dismantle terrorist groups and protect communities from violence.

“Mananatili kaming matatag sa pagtugis sa mga grupong naghahasik ng karahasan upang matiyak ang kaligtasan at kapayapaan ng ating mga mamamayan,” Cagara said.

Military units continue to conduct clearing and security operations in the area to ensure the safety of nearby communities and prevent any possible retaliatory actions from remaining members of the group.

The Dawlah Islamiyah–Hassan Group is among several armed factions operating in parts of Mindanao that have been linked to extremist activities and attacks against security forces and civilians in recent years.
