ISABELA CITY, Basilan — Authorities have launched an intensive investigation after a headless cadaver was discovered inside a sack floating in the waters near Lampinigan Island at around noon on Thursday, March 19, 2026.

According to an initial report from the Philippine Coast Guard Station (CGS) Isabela, the gruesome discovery was first made by a local fisherman who spotted the sack drifting at sea while navigating the waters between Lampinigan Island and nearby coastal areas. Sensing something unusual, the fisherman immediately alerted barangay officials.

Barangay authorities responded to the report and proceeded to the area to verify the sighting. Upon confirmation, they promptly coordinated with the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) and the Philippine National Police Scene of the Crime Operatives (PNP SOCO), who arrived to secure the scene and begin documentation and forensic examination.

Initial findings confirmed that the remains, already in a state of decomposition, were found without a head and stuffed inside a sack—indicating possible foul play. Investigators have yet to determine the identity of the victim, as well as the circumstances and motive behind the killing.

The discovery has sparked concern among residents, particularly as some netizens linked the incident to ongoing cases of missing persons in the area, including unverified claims that the remains could be connected to a previously reported tragedy involving an individual named Trisha Kerstin. Authorities, however, have not confirmed any such connection and cautioned the public against speculation pending official forensic results.

In a social media post, a concerned resident said a water delivery boat traveling to Lampinigan Island also sighted the floating remains and reported the matter to local government authorities and the Coast Guard. The same post urged officials to immediately release updates to help families of missing persons determine whether the recovered body could be that of their loved one.

The PCG and PNP SOCO are continuing their joint investigation, including efforts to recover any additional evidence from the area and conduct post-mortem identification procedures. Authorities are also expected to coordinate with nearby communities to gather information that could lead to the identification of the victim and possible suspects.

As of this writing, no suspects have been identified, and authorities have yet to release further details pending the results of forensic examinations.
