LAMITAN CITY, Basilan — Authorities are investigating a hand grenade attack that struck the area in front of a newly constructed Jollibee branch in Barangay Malakas on Tuesday night, March 3, just four days before the establishment’s scheduled grand opening.

Police said the explosion occurred at around 7:07 p.m., when two unidentified suspects riding tandem on a motorcycle reportedly passed by the site and suddenly hurled a hand grenade toward the front of the building. The suspects immediately fled the scene in an unknown direction after the attack.

The blast caused alarm among residents and passersby in the area, shaking nearby establishments and prompting an immediate response from local police and emergency personnel.

One civilian, identified as Reveil Masulog, 22, a resident of Pagadian City, sustained minor injuries from the explosion and was promptly given first aid at the scene. Authorities have yet to confirm if there were additional casualties or property damage as of this writing.

Responding law enforcement units quickly secured the area and launched a hot pursuit operation to identify and apprehend the suspects behind the attack. Investigators are also working to determine the motive and whether the incident specifically targeted the soon-to-open fast-food outlet.

Initial reports indicated that the grenade detonated in front of the newly constructed building, which has been widely anticipated by residents as a major commercial addition to the city. The incident sparked fear and concern in the community, especially with the opening of the establishment only days away.

Local authorities have not yet released further details about the suspects or possible leads in the investigation. Meanwhile, officials are reviewing CCTV footage from nearby establishments and gathering witness accounts to help track down those responsible.

The branch, set to open later this month, is expected to be the second store of the popular fast-food chain in Basilan, reflecting the province’s growing business landscape and economic activity. For many residents, the upcoming opening symbolized development and new opportunities, including additional employment for locals.

On social media, excitement had been building among Basilan residents ahead of the opening, with many expressing eagerness for easier access to the brand’s well-known menu items and a new dining destination in Lamitan City.

As of now, the management of the fast-food chain has not released an official statement regarding the explosion. Authorities assured the public that security measures are being strengthened while the investigation continues.
