MAIGO, Lanao del Norte — Government security forces and local leaders marked a significant step toward strengthening peace and security in Lanao del Norte after several loose firearms and explosives were voluntarily surrendered during a turnover ceremony conducted by the military on March 12.

The 5th Mechanized Infantry (KAAGAPAY) Battalion, led by its Commanding Officer Lt. Col. Francisco Butch B. Canzado, facilitated the Small Arms and Light Weapons (SALW) Management Program and Turn-over of Loose Firearms at the unit’s Rear Command Post in Barangay Claro M. Recto, Maigo, Lanao del Norte.
The activity was carried out under the operational control of the 2nd Mechanized Infantry Brigade and gathered key officials from the military, police, national government agencies, and local government units.
Among the officials present were Col. Bernardo A. Taqueban, Acting Brigade Commander of the 2nd Mechanized Infantry Brigade; Police Colonel Leo D. Sua, Provincial Director of the Lanao del Norte Police Provincial Office; representatives from the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) and the Office of the Presidential Adviser on Peace, Reconciliation and Unity (OPAPRU); as well as Lanao del Norte Board Member Sidick M. Dibaratun, chairperson of the Provincial Peace and Order Committee.
Local chief executives and their representatives from several municipalities also attended the event to show their support for the government’s campaign against the proliferation of loose firearms.
During the program, authorities reported the voluntary surrender of 15 assorted high- and low-powered firearms, three explosive devices, and several pieces of assorted ammunition.
The weapons were turned in by residents from the municipalities of Bacolod, Maigo, Magsaysay, and Nunungan in Lanao del Norte as part of ongoing peace and security initiatives in the province.
Military officials said the initiative reflects the growing cooperation between the community and government institutions in maintaining peace and order.
The SALW Management Program aims to reduce the number of unregistered or illegally held weapons that could potentially be used in criminal activities or armed conflict, while encouraging communities to support the government’s peacebuilding efforts.
Authorities emphasized that the program is the result of close collaboration among the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP), the Philippine National Police (PNP), local government units, and national agencies working together to address security concerns at the grassroots level.
Officials also noted that voluntary firearm surrender programs help build trust between civilians and security forces while preventing violence and strengthening community stability.
The 5th Mechanized Infantry Battalion reaffirmed its commitment to supporting government-led peace initiatives and sustaining security operations in its area of responsibility, as it continues to work with partner agencies and local leaders to ensure long-term stability and lasting peace in Lanao del Norte.
