ZAMBOANGA CITY — Authorities recovered more than half a million pesos worth of suspected smuggled cigarettes abandoned in a coastal community here during an anti-crime operation over the weekend, police said.

Personnel from Zamboanga City Police Office – Police Station 9 (Ayala), led by station commander Jing B. Alarcon, seized the contraband during an Oplan Galugad operation conducted in Zone 2, Barangay Cawit on the afternoon of March 7, 2026.

The operation was carried out in coordination with barangay officials and community watchmen (tanods) of Barangay Cawit.

Abandoned contraband discovered

According to police reports, authorities were conducting routine inspection and monitoring activities in the area when they discovered several boxes containing assorted brands of cigarettes suspected to have been illegally imported into the country.

The contraband appeared to have been abandoned by unidentified individuals, possibly after learning about the presence of authorities in the area.

Police immediately secured the items and conducted an inventory at the scene in the presence of barangay officials to ensure proper documentation and transparency.

Half-million peso value

Initial estimates placed the value of the confiscated cigarettes at around ₱512,000.

Authorities believe the cigarettes were intended for distribution in the local black market, a common route used by smugglers to avoid paying government taxes and duties.

Smuggling of cigarettes is considered a serious economic offense because it undermines legitimate businesses and deprives the government of millions of pesos in tax revenues each year.

Ongoing investigation

Police said an investigation is underway to identify the individuals responsible for the illegal shipment and determine how the cigarettes were transported and abandoned in the barangay.

Law enforcement officials are also coordinating with other agencies to trace possible smuggling networks operating in coastal communities of Zamboanga City, which has long been vulnerable to illicit trade due to its proximity to international maritime borders.

Police commitment

The Philippine National Police reiterated its commitment to intensifying operations against smuggling and other illegal activities that threaten economic security and public order.

Police Station 9 assured the public that operations like Oplan Galugad will continue as part of broader efforts to curb illegal trade and protect communities from the impact of contraband goods.

Authorities urged residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities to help law enforcement agencies crack down on smuggling operations in the city.
