LINAMON, Lanao del Norte — Authorities intercepted an estimated ₱400,000 worth of smuggled cigarettes during a checkpoint operation conducted early Monday morning, March 2, 2026, in Barangay Samburon, highlighting the continuing crackdown on illegal tobacco trade in the province.

According to police reports, personnel from the 1st Provincial Mobile Force Company (PMFC) of the Philippine National Police were manning a checkpoint when they flagged down a Toyota Revo Wagon at around 9:24 a.m. The vehicle was reportedly traveling toward Iligan City from the municipality of Munai.

During a routine inspection, authorities immediately noticed several boxes loaded inside the vehicle. A closer examination revealed that the cargo consisted of large quantities of cigarettes suspected to be smuggled. When asked to present the necessary permits and documents, the driver reportedly failed to produce any proof of legal transport or taxation, prompting authorities to seize the shipment on the spot.

Police said the confiscated items included 10 master cases or approximately 500 reams of cigarettes, specifically the brands Modern and San Marino, with an estimated market value of ₱400,000.

The driver was brought to the Philippine National Police station in Linamon for proper documentation and further investigation. Authorities are now determining possible charges related to the transport and possession of smuggled tobacco products.

Meanwhile, the seized cigarettes will be turned over to the Bureau of Customs office in Iligan City for appropriate disposition and further verification.

Law enforcement officials emphasized that checkpoint operations remain a key strategy in curbing the illegal cigarette trade, which continues to undermine government revenues and supports underground distribution networks. Authorities also warned transporters and traders that intensified monitoring along major routes in Lanao del Norte and neighboring areas will continue in the coming weeks as part of broader anti-smuggling efforts.
