DUMINGAG, Zamboanga del Sur — A 26-year-old farmer is now fighting for his life after he was allegedly shot in the head by his own father during a heated altercation in Purok 2, Barangay Labangon, Dumingag, on the afternoon of February 4, 2026.

The victim was identified as Jayman Saligan Liloy, a resident of the area, while the suspect was named as his father, Alberto Saligan Liloy. According to the Dumingag Municipal Police Station, the shooting happened at around 5:35 p.m. following a verbal and physical confrontation between Alberto and a barangay tanod identified as Ronaldo Lagare Gutang.

Police Chief PMaj. Glenn Pollescas said the incident began when the suspect and the barangay tanod engaged in a heated argument that quickly escalated into a scuffle. Witnesses said Jayman tried to intervene and calm both parties in an effort to prevent further violence. However, instead of backing down, the suspect reportedly pulled out a firearm and fired, striking his own son in the head.

The victim immediately collapsed and was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he remains under intensive medical care. Medical authorities have not yet released detailed information about his condition, but police said he suffered serious injuries and continues to undergo treatment.

Further investigation revealed that after shooting his son, the suspect allegedly fired several more shots at the barangay tanod. Fortunately, the village officer managed to escape unharmed by running for cover.

Initial reports earlier indicated that the suspect fled toward an unknown direction following the incident. However, police later confirmed that Alberto Liloy was eventually arrested through follow-up operations conducted by local authorities.

PMaj. Pollescas said that the suspect is now in police custody and is facing multiple criminal charges, including frustrated murder, illegal discharge of firearm, and violations of existing firearms laws, pending further investigation.

“This is a deeply tragic incident that highlights how quickly conflicts can turn deadly when firearms are involved,” Pollescas said. “We urge the public to resolve disputes peacefully and to report individuals who illegally possess weapons.”

Local officials and community members expressed shock and sorrow over the incident, describing the victim as a hardworking farmer who only intended to stop the fight and protect others from harm. Many residents also called for stronger community-based conflict resolution and stricter enforcement of gun control measures to prevent similar tragedies.

Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the shooting, including the motive behind the altercation and the origin of the firearm used. Meanwhile, police assured the public that they are committed to ensuring justice for the victim and maintaining peace and order in the community.

As Jayman Liloy continues to battle for recovery, his family and neighbors are appealing for prayers and support, hoping that he will survive the tragic incident that turned a moment of mediation into a life-threatening ordeal.
