GENERAL SANTOS CITY — A mother lost both of her hands while her teenage son suffered head injuries after they were brutally hacked by a close relative in a violent attack allegedly triggered by malicious rumors in Purok Buan, Barangay Sinawal, early Tuesday morning.

Police identified the victims as Merriam Endal Kalamag, 45, a small business owner, and her son, Moisher Kalamag, 19, both residents of the area. They are currently confined in a hospital and undergoing medical treatment for their serious injuries.
The suspect was identified as Asser Kanebpal, also known as “Nazzer,” an adult resident of the same community.
Attempted Arson Preceded Attack
Based on police investigation, the incident occurred at around 5:30 a.m. while the victims were resting inside their home. Authorities said the suspect initially tried to set the house on fire, prompting the mother and son to rush outside and seek help from neighbors.
Residents immediately responded, preventing the fire from spreading and putting it out before it could cause major damage.
However, investigators said the suspect was already waiting outside, armed with a bladed weapon.
When the victims emerged, he allegedly launched a sudden and vicious attack.
Mother Severely Injured, Son Escapes
Moisher was struck on the head but managed to flee and seek help despite his injury. His mother, however, was overtaken by the suspect and repeatedly hacked.
In a desperate attempt to shield herself, Merriam raised her hands, resulting in both of them being severed during the assault.
The victims were rushed to a nearby hospital by concerned residents and emergency responders.
Suspect Flees, Later Surrenders
After the attack, the suspect fled the scene and evaded authorities for several hours.
He was later located in Buluan, Maguindanao del Norte, at around 3:00 p.m., after his family convinced him to surrender to the authorities.
He was subsequently turned over to police and placed under custody.
Motive: Rumors, Bullying, and Marital Issues
According to police, the primary motive behind the attack was the spread of false rumors allegedly involving the suspect’s separation from his wife.
Investigators said the suspect believed the victims were responsible for circulating gossip about his personal life, which he claimed led to public humiliation and the breakdown of his marriage.
In his initial statement, the suspect also alleged that he had been bullied and ridiculed by the victims, and that they frequently discussed his private matters within the community.
He claimed these incidents caused him emotional distress and anger, eventually pushing him to commit the crime.
Suspect in Custody, Charges Being Prepared
The suspect is currently detained at Makar Police Station and later transferred to Police Station 2 for further processing.
Authorities said he will face multiple criminal charges, including frustrated murder, serious physical injuries, and arson.
Police officials emphasized that mental and emotional stress does not justify violence and warned that spreading malicious rumors can have devastating consequences.
Community in Shock
Residents of Barangay Sinawal expressed shock and grief over the incident, describing the victims as peaceful and hardworking members of the community.
Local officials and social workers have begun coordinating assistance for the victims, especially for the mother who now faces permanent disability due to her injuries.
Investigation Ongoing
Police said the case remains under investigation as they gather additional evidence and statements from witnesses.
Authorities urged the public to resolve conflicts peacefully and report threats or harassment immediately to prevent similar incidents.
“This tragedy shows how gossip and unresolved personal conflicts can escalate into extreme violence,” police said in a statement. “We call on the community to promote dialogue, understanding, and respect.”
The victims remain under close medical supervision as doctors continue efforts to stabilize their condition and support their recovery.
