BUTUAN CITY, Philippines — A man identified as Jigger Bascon was shot dead in a brazen daylight attack in Purok 5A, Barangay Taligaman in Butuan City on the morning of February 26, 2026, prompting an ongoing investigation by local police.

According to initial reports from authorities and residents, Bascon—also known by the alias “Balengit ng P5”—was at his home when the incident occurred at around 11:00 a.m. Witnesses said a suspect arrived in the area aboard a single motorcycle before approaching the victim. Moments later, gunshots rang out, with at least three shots reportedly fired, striking Bascon in the head and causing his immediate death.

Police and SWAT personnel responded quickly to the scene after receiving reports of the shooting. Authorities have since launched an investigation, interviewing residents in the neighborhood to determine the motive and identify the suspects behind the attack.

Some residents alleged that Bascon had been linked to illegal drug activities in the area, claiming that individuals were frequently seen visiting his residence to purchase suspected shabu. A witness recounted that shortly before the shooting, the victim and the suspect were allegedly discussing the price of illegal drugs when the gunman suddenly opened fire.

Despite these claims, police have yet to confirm the motive and are continuing to gather evidence, including testimonies from witnesses and possible leads that could help identify the assailant, who fled the scene after the attack.

The killing has stirred concern among residents of Barangay Taligaman, as the incident happened in broad daylight within a residential community. Authorities are urging anyone with information that could aid the investigation to come forward.

Meanwhile, tributes and messages of grief circulated online following the victim’s death. One post from a friend expressed sorrow over the loss, saying Bascon was still young and thanking him for the time they shared.

Police said updates will be released as soon as further details become available from the ongoing investigation.
