MALABANG, Lanao del Sur — A 39-year-old man was arrested after he was found in possession of an unlicensed firearm during a late-night checkpoint operation conducted by the Malabang Municipal Police Station (MPS) in Barangay Curahab on February 8, 2025, authorities confirmed.

The suspect was intercepted at around 11:50 p.m. as police personnel intensified security measures and routine inspections in the area as part of their ongoing campaign against loose and illegal firearms. During the inspection, officers discovered a caliber .45 pistol loaded with five live rounds in the suspect’s possession.

Police said the suspect failed to present any valid license or legal documents authorizing him to own or carry the firearm, prompting his immediate arrest. The seized weapon and ammunition were confiscated and turned over to the Malabang MPS for proper documentation and forensic examination.

Authorities said the suspect will face charges for violation of Republic Act No. 10591, also known as the Comprehensive Firearms and Ammunition Regulation Act, which strictly regulates the ownership, possession, and carrying of firearms in the country.

In a statement, Malabang MPS Acting Chief of Police, PCPT Esmer R. Gahi, reiterated that illegal firearms pose a serious threat to public safety and have no place in the community.

“Illegal firearms continue to endanger lives and undermine peace and order. We remain committed to strengthening our operations to protect our people and ensure a safe environment for everyone,” Gahi said.

He added that checkpoint operations and patrols will be further intensified, especially in strategic areas, to prevent criminal activities and curb the proliferation of unregistered weapons.

Police officials emphasized that the successful arrest reflects the effectiveness of sustained law enforcement efforts and community cooperation in maintaining security in Malabang and nearby areas.

The Malabang MPS also urged residents to remain vigilant and to promptly report any suspicious activities or information related to illegal firearms to authorities through their hotline at 0998 967 4679.

“Public cooperation is crucial in our fight against crime. By working together, we can keep our communities peaceful, orderly, and free from threats,” the police said.

The suspect remains under police custody as the filing of formal charges is being prepared.
