BRGY. KITANGO, DATU SAUDI AMPATUAN, Maguindanao del Sur — In a continued effort to preserve peace and security in conflict-prone areas of Maguindanao del Sur, the 38th Infantry (We Clear) Battalion of the Philippine Army held a high-level coordination meeting with leaders of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) on strengthening cooperation and preventing security-related misunderstandings.

The meeting was led by Lieutenant Colonel Erwin E. Felongco, Infantry (GSC), Philippine Army, and Ustadz Abdulwahid Tundok of the 118th Base Command of the MILF. It was conducted in Barangay Kitango with the active facilitation of the Joint Peace and Security Team (JPST) and the Coordinating Committee on the Cessation of Hostilities (CCCH).

During the engagement, both sides discussed measures to enhance coordination mechanisms, synchronize security operations, and reinforce mutual responsibilities in maintaining peace and order within their respective areas of responsibility. The dialogue focused on ensuring transparent communication, timely information-sharing, and rapid conflict resolution to prevent the escalation of minor incidents into major security concerns.

Lt. Col. Felongco emphasized the importance of continuous dialogue and cooperation between government forces and former combatants, noting that sustained peace can only be achieved through trust, mutual respect, and shared accountability.

“This coordination is vital in strengthening our partnership with the MILF and in ensuring that communities remain safe, stable, and free from violence,” Felongco said. “Through constant engagement, we can address issues immediately and work together for the welfare of our people.”

For his part, Ustadz Tundok reiterated the MILF’s commitment to the peace process and its responsibility in supporting government efforts to maintain stability in the region. He stressed that cooperation with security forces is essential in protecting civilians and promoting development in previously conflict-affected areas.

Both parties also reaffirmed their support for the ongoing peace process and their determination to prevent armed confrontations, misunderstandings, and the resurgence of violence. They committed to strengthening coordination through regular consultations, joint monitoring, and closer collaboration with peace mechanisms such as the JPST and CCCH.

Community leaders and residents in the area welcomed the initiative, viewing it as a positive step toward lasting peace and socio-economic progress. Improved security conditions, they said, are crucial in encouraging investments, restoring livelihoods, and enhancing access to basic services in rural communities.

The Philippine Army and the MILF expressed optimism that sustained dialogue and cooperation will continue to build confidence between stakeholders and reinforce peace and order in Maguindanao del Sur.

The coordination meeting forms part of the broader efforts of government and peace partners to ensure that gains achieved through the peace agreement are preserved and translated into tangible benefits for communities, particularly in areas once affected by armed conflict.

Officials said similar engagements will be conducted regularly to strengthen partnerships and ensure that peace and development remain at the forefront of efforts in the Bangsamoro region.
