The Philippine National Police–Maritime Group (PNP-MG) has intensified its commitment to environmental protection in Mindanao following separate voluntary wildlife surrenders in Tawi-Tawi and Agusan del Norte on February 4, 2026.

In Bongao, Tawi-Tawi, a concerned citizen voluntarily turned over a live Philippine Hanging Parrot (Tanygnathus lucionensis), locally known as “Kulasisi,” to personnel of the Tawi-Tawi Maritime Police Station (MARPSTA). Upon verification, authorities confirmed that the bird belongs to a critically endangered species. Recognizing the urgency of the situation, MARPSTA personnel immediately coordinated with the Municipal Environment and Natural Resources Office (MENRO) for proper medical assessment, documentation, and preparation for the bird’s eventual return to its natural habitat.
On the same day in Butuan City, Agusan del Norte, another civilian surrendered a live monitor lizard (Varanus salvator), commonly known as “bayawak,” to the Agusan del Norte MARPSTA. The reptile was promptly turned over to the Department of Environment and Natural Resources–Community Environment and Natural Resources Office (DENR-CENRO) in Butuan City for appropriate care, evaluation, and legal disposition in accordance with existing wildlife protection protocols.
Authorities said the voluntary surrender of wildlife reflects growing public awareness of Republic Act 9147, or the “Wildlife Resources Conservation and Protection Act,” which prohibits the illegal possession, transport, and trade of protected species. Through timely coordination with environmental agencies, the PNP-Maritime Group ensures that rescued animals receive humane treatment and are given the best chance for survival in their natural environment.
The PNP-Maritime Group emphasized that these incidents demonstrate the importance of strong community cooperation in safeguarding Mindanao’s rich but vulnerable biodiversity. By encouraging responsible reporting and surrender of wildlife, authorities aim to curb illegal wildlife activities while promoting environmental stewardship among local communities.
Aligned with the “Bagong PNP para sa Bagong Pilipinas: Serbisyong Mabilis, Tapat, at Naramdaman” advocacy, the PNP-MG reaffirmed its dedication to proactive, transparent, and people-centered law enforcement. The group continues to call on the public to support conservation efforts and work with authorities in protecting the country’s natural heritage for future generations.
