TAGANAK, Tawi-Tawi — The timely presence of naval assets and sustained maritime patrols once again proved crucial after 30 passengers were rescued by the Philippine Navy from a distressed motor launch off the waters east of Taganak, Tawi-Tawi, on the night of January 16, 2026.

According to the Western Mindanao Naval Command (WMNC), the rescue was carried out by BRP Juan Magluyan (PC392) while the vessel was conducting a routine maritime patrol—an operation that authorities say is vital in securing the country’s vast and often treacherous sea lanes.

At around 9:30 p.m., the patrol ship spotted a flashing light approximately 46 nautical miles east of Taganak. Upon closer inspection, the Navy identified the distressed vessel, M/L Nurdia, which was dead in the water after its rudder broke amid rough seas caused by deteriorating weather conditions.

Despite challenging sea states, the crew of BRP Juan Magluyan immediately conducted a rescue operation, safely taking aboard all 30 passengers. Those rescued included 16 men and nine women—among them a pregnant passenger and two senior citizens—as well as five children.

By 4:45 a.m. the following day, all passengers were safely disembarked at Taganak Pier and formally turned over to the local government. The Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office, working in coordination with the Philippine Coast Guard, provided immediate humanitarian assistance, including food, water, and medical support.

Naval officials stressed that the successful rescue highlights the importance of maintaining capable naval assets and enforcing regular patrols, particularly in remote and high-risk maritime areas such as Tawi-Tawi, which lies close to international sea routes near Sabah, Malaysia.

“The outcome of this operation shows why constant maritime presence matters,” WMNC said in a statement. “Routine patrols enable early detection and rapid response, saving lives at sea and reinforcing safety within our maritime domain.”

Local authorities confirmed that the damaged motor launch was later secured near the coast of Taganak. The passengers were reportedly en route to another island municipality in Tawi-Tawi when the incident occurred.

The Western Mindanao Naval Command reiterated its commitment to safeguarding lives and protecting Philippine waters, noting that sustained investment in naval platforms and consistent patrol operations remain essential to maritime safety, disaster response, and the protection of the country’s territorial domain.
