Family, media community mourn loss of a dedicated public servant

MARIHATAG, SURIGAO DEL SUR — A town councilor and former broadcast journalist was killed in a brutal stabbing attack on Saturday morning, December 6, 2025, in Barangay Poblacion, Marihatag.

The victim, identified as Councilor Gerry Sales Campos, 53, married, and a resident of Purok 2, Barangay Sta. Cruz, sustained multiple stab wounds after he was assaulted by a lone suspect at around 7:20 a.m. near the ARC Gas Station.

According to the initial investigation of the Marihatag Municipal Police Station, Campos had just stepped out of his vehicle and was walking towards the gas station when the suspect — identified as Sandy Constanin Rivas, 43, single, a laborer, and resident of Purok 1, Barangay Sta. Cruz — suddenly emerged and stabbed him repeatedly using a long, sharp knife.

Bystanders immediately rushed the wounded councilor to a nearby clinic, but he was declared dead on arrival.

Police believe personal grudge may have been the motive behind the attack. The suspect was swiftly arrested by duty beat patrollers and is now under the custody of the Marihatag Municipal Police Station pending inquest proceedings.

A Loss Felt by the Media and Public Service Sectors

Campos was not only a sitting member of the Sangguniang Bayan — he was also a respected figure in the media community of the Caraga Region, having previously served as Program Director of RMN Butuan. Colleagues describe him as a hardworking communicator who carried his passion for public service into his role as a local legislator.

His sudden death has sent shockwaves throughout Surigao del Sur, with many condemning the violence and calling for justice.
