MARAWI CITY — An abandoned house in Barangay Tampilong was raided by police on the initiative of Barangay Chairman Mohammad Palawan after reports that it was being used to sell alcoholic beverages and other items prohibited under Islamic law, local officials confirmed.

Chairman Palawan coordinated with personnel of the Philippine National Police (PNP) to conduct the operation, citing concerns that the structure was being converted into an illegal vending site. During the inspection, authorities reportedly discovered alcoholic drinks and several condoms inside the abandoned house.

The sale and possession of alcoholic beverages are strictly prohibited in Marawi City, which is governed by Islamic laws and ordinances. Local leaders stressed that such activities violate not only city regulations but also core Islamic teachings, where alcohol and related immoral activities are considered haram or forbidden.

According to barangay officials, Chairman Palawan ordered immediate coordination with law enforcement to prevent the continuation of what he described as activities harmful to public morals, particularly to the youth. The barangay leadership emphasized that abandoned structures should not be allowed to become breeding grounds for illegal or immoral practices.

Community members and local leaders praised the barangay chairman’s decisive action, noting that barangay officials, traditional leaders, and religious authorities play a crucial role in maintaining peace and order in Marawi City. They underscored that barangay chairpersons are mandated to prevent illegal activities, work closely with authorities, and educate residents on the dangers of vices such as illegal gambling, drugs, and alcohol.

Traditional and religious leaders likewise reiterated their responsibility to guide the community, uphold Islamic values, and support programs aimed at curbing activities that violate both the law and religious principles.

Authorities said further investigation will be conducted to determine who was operating the illegal activity and to ensure that similar violations do not recur in the area.
