DATU ODIN SINSUAT, Maguindanao del Norte — What was meant to be a joyful community activity turned tragic after an 18-year-old participant collapsed and later died during a fun run held in the municipality on Sunday morning.

The victim, identified as Jason Flores Buisan, a resident of Barangay Makir, reportedly weakened and struggled to breathe before losing consciousness while participating in the event. Witnesses said the teenager suddenly fell to the ground, prompting an urgent response from on-site personnel.

Members of the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (MDRRMO) rushed Jason to the nearest hospital. Despite rapid medical attention, he was declared dead minutes later, sending shockwaves across the community.

According to information gathered, Jason had reportedly recited the Qur’an the night before the event. While the exact cause of his sudden collapse has not yet been disclosed, authorities emphasized that a full investigation is underway to determine all contributing factors.

Mayor Abdulmain “Baba” Abas extended his deepest condolences to the bereaved family, personally visiting them alongside Vice Mayor Bobsteel Sinsuat and members of the Sangguniang Bayan.

In a statement, Mayor Abas said the LGU’s medical team responded immediately, but “despite their efforts, the young participant could no longer be saved.” The mayor assured the family that the local government is ready to provide support as they cope with their loss.

The entire municipality is now in mourning over the death of the young participant, described by many as active, respectful, and full of promise.

Following the tragedy, Mayor Abas ordered a comprehensive review of safety protocols for all LGU-organized activities. He stressed the need to strengthen medical preparedness, pre-event health screenings, and emergency response capabilities to prevent similar incidents in future events.

He also urged the public to pray for the Buisan family and respect their privacy during this difficult time.

Lesson for Organizers and Participants

This heartbreaking incident serves as a critical reminder to all organizers and participants:

  • Strict pre-event medical assessments must be enforced, especially for physically demanding activities like fun runs.
  • Organizers must ensure robust emergency preparedness, including standby ambulances, medical teams, hydration stations, and clear protocols for immediate evacuation of distressed participants.
  • Participants should prioritize personal health, ensure adequate rest before events, stay hydrated, and seek medical clearance if they feel unwell.
  • Community events must never compromise safety, regardless of scale or expected turnout.

Jason’s untimely passing is a painful loss—but it also underscores the urgent need to strengthen safety measures and cultivate a culture of preparedness to safeguard lives.

The investigation continues.
