BULUAN, MAGUINDANAO DEL SUR — What was supposed to be an ordinary lake crossing turned into a heartbreaking tragedy when a motorized boat carrying a family capsized after being struck by a sudden whirlwind in Lake Buluan on Monday afternoon, November 3, 2025.
According to initial reports, four members of a family were aboard the boat when it was hit by a powerful gust of wind while traversing the waters near Barangay Maslabeng. The violent whirlwind caused the boat to overturn, throwing all passengers into the lake.
Rescuers immediately rushed to the scene and managed to save the father and two of his children, who were brought to the Buluan District Hospital for medical treatment. However, the mother remained missing, prompting an urgent search and rescue operation.
Buluan Vice Mayor Kuya King T. Mangudadatu personally led the operation, along with members of the local government, rescue teams, and community volunteers who worked tirelessly despite the challenging weather conditions.
After several hours of searching, rescuers found the lifeless body of the missing mother in the waters of Lake Buluan. The tragic discovery ended hopes for her safe recovery, leaving the town in mourning.
Authorities extended their condolences to the bereaved family and expressed gratitude to all rescuers and residents who took part in the operation. They also urged fisherfolk and boat passengers to remain cautious and avoid crossing the lake during unstable weather conditions to prevent similar incidents.
As the community grieves, the incident serves as a painful reminder of nature’s unpredictability—and the compassion and unity that shine through even in times of loss.
