TIPO-TIPO, BASILAN — What was once a peaceful town has now turned into a place of fear and silence as tension and violence escalate in Tipo-Tipo, Basilan, following a deadly series of revenge attacks linked to a long-standing rido (clan feud).

The violence erupted after the shooting of Barangay Baguindan Kagawad Nadzri Tarahin at the Lamitan City bus terminal on October 21. Retaliatory attacks soon followed, claiming more lives and plunging the community into chaos. According to District 2 Board Member Dr. Nur Khan Istarul, enraged individuals have resorted to indiscriminate violence, firing at anyone in sight as emotions run high.

Last night, another gunfight broke out, leaving one more dead as vengeance fueled the already volatile situation. As the cycle of retaliation continues, the once-bustling center of Tipo-Tipo has become a ghost town—stores shuttered, streets deserted, and families either hiding in fear or fleeing for safety.

Local authorities, led by Tipo-Tipo Mayor Istarul, along with military forces, are now working to control the situation and prevent further bloodshed. However, reports indicate that tension remains high, with residents fearing the outbreak of a full-scale armed clash.

All government operations have come to a halt. The town is paralyzed by fear,” a local official confirmed, describing the gravity of the situation as “on the brink of explosion.”

Military tanks are now visible in the town center as soldiers patrol to deter further violence. Meanwhile, business establishments have closed, and evacuation efforts are ongoing for residents living near conflict zones.

Amid the crisis, there are reports of threats from armed groups, allegedly linked to local factions, further heightening anxiety among civilians.

This alarming situation demands swift and decisive action from both the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) and the Bangsamoro government to de-escalate tensions, mediate between warring clans, and protect innocent lives.

Peace advocates and concerned citizens are calling for urgent intervention to restore peace and normalcy in Tipo-Tipo. The lives, livelihood, and safety of hundreds of residents now hang in the balance.

As Tipo-Tipo stands on edge, the people of Basilan plead for calm, compassion, and coordinated action — before the violence claims more lives and tears the community apart further.

Let us stand in solidarity with the people of Tipo-Tipo.
They deserve peace, not fear — and they need it now.
