TALAYAN, MAGUINDANAO DEL SUR — A new chapter of peace and unity unfolded in Maguindanao del Sur as rival groups under the Bangsamoro Islamic Armed Forces (BIAF) of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) formally ended a long-standing “rido” or clan feud in a historic settlement ceremony on October 13, 2025.

The peace accord, held in Poblacion, Talayan, was successfully mediated under the leadership of Brigadier General Edgar L. Catu, Commander of the 601st Infantry (Unifier) Brigade, between the groups of Commander Anwari Gayanandang and Commander Diya Mohamad Payatok, both from the 118th Base Command of the BIAF-MILF.

The reconciliation was witnessed by key leaders, including Governor Datu Ali M. Midtimbang of Maguindanao del Sur, who served as the chief proponent of peace and unity in the province. Also in attendance were LTC German Legada, Commanding Officer of the 33rd Infantry Battalion; LTC Loqui O. Marco, Commanding Officer of the 90th Infantry Battalion; SB Member Datu Macky M. Ampatuan representing the Local Government Unit of Mamasapano; and MILF leaders Ustadz Wahid Tundok, Malik J. Caril, and Hafiz Abuhuraira from the PSRO–OCM BARMM, along with representatives from the MILF-CCCH and JPST Kitango.

Governor Midtimbang, known for his long-standing peace advocacy, emphasized the importance of dialogue and mutual respect in healing divisions within the Bangsamoro communities.

“Our goal is to foster genuine peace,” he said. “Through our collective efforts, we are showing that nothing is impossible when understanding and compassion prevail. I hope this serves as an inspiration for other communities to end their conflicts and begin anew in unity.”

Brig. Gen. Catu lauded both sides for their courage in choosing peace over continued conflict.

“The 601st Brigade remains committed as a partner in maintaining stability and harmony in Maguindanao del Sur,” he stated. “Part of our mandate is to serve as a bridge for peace mediation and dialogue. With the continued support of the provincial government and partner agencies, we can achieve a stable and peaceful life for all Bangsamoro.”

In a message of solidarity, Maj. Gen. Donald M. Gumiran, Commander of the 6th Infantry (Kampilan) Division, Joint Task Force Central (JTFC), and Western Mindanao Command (WestMinCom), reaffirmed the military’s role in nation-building beyond security operations.

“Your soldiers remain steadfast partners in achieving lasting peace and resolving community conflicts,” Maj. Gen. Gumiran said. “True peace can only be attained through cooperation among all sectors under a whole-of-nation approach. You have proven that your service extends beyond security—it is for the unity and progress of our people.”

The rido settlement in Talayan marks another milestone in the continuing peace process in the Bangsamoro region, strengthening the collaboration among the military, local government units, and MILF leaders in promoting reconciliation and sustainable development.

As peace reigns anew in Maguindanao del Sur, local leaders and security forces vow to uphold the momentum—transforming former battlegrounds into symbols of hope and collective progress for the Bangsamoro people.
