Isabela City, Basilan – Today, September 21, the people of Isabela City solemnly commemorate the 128th anniversary of the devastating 1897 Sulu Trench Earthquake and Tsunami, an event that left an indelible mark on the city’s history and faith.
On that fateful morning of September 21, 1897, at 5:12 a.m., an 8.7-magnitude earthquake—the strongest ever recorded in the Philippines—shook Basilan and Zamboanga. The violent tremors toppled every masonry structure, reducing thriving communities into rubble. Within minutes, a towering 7-meter tsunami swept over the northern and western coasts of Basilan, submerging villages and claiming countless lives.
Yet amidst this destruction, the faithful of Isabela believed they were spared from complete annihilation through the miraculous intercession of their patroness, Santa Isabel de Portugal. Tradition holds that she subdued the raging waves, saving the Isabeliños from further catastrophe. To this day, the event is remembered as both tragedy and miracle—a testament to faith, resilience, and divine protection.
This year’s commemoration, themed “Santa Isabel: Protectora Entre Calamidad Y Defensor de Matrimonio Santidad,” pays tribute to the patroness’ role as a protector during calamities and as a defender of sanctity in marriage.
The Local Government Unit of Isabela City, under the leadership of Mayor Sitti Djalia A. Turabin-Hataman, together with the City Tourism Office and the Prelature of Basilan, prepared a series of solemn and cultural activities. Flags and streamers now adorn the city, setting the tone for both reverence and celebration.
Highlights of the day include the fluvial procession beginning with a send-off from Sta. Isabel de Portugal Cathedral Parish. The sacred image will be brought to James Walter Strong Boulevard, then sailed along the scenic coastal waters of Malamawi Island. Following the fluvial procession, a solemn land procession will return the image of Santa Isabel to the Cathedral Parish, where prayers and thanksgiving will be offered.
More than a remembrance of loss, the Conmemoracion de Terremoto is a renewal of faith and unity. It brings together devotees, pilgrims, and tourists who witness not only the city’s religious devotion but also its deep cultural heritage. For visitors, the event offers a chance to experience Basilan’s vibrant spirituality, breathtaking coastal views, and enduring traditions that blend grief, hope, and celebration.
As the bells of Sta. Isabel Cathedral ring, the people of Isabela City stand together in gratitude—for lives preserved, for lessons of preparedness and solidarity, and for the enduring intercession of their beloved patroness. The commemoration is both a reflection on the past and a beacon of hope for the future, reminding all that faith can turn calamity into strength and tragedy into testimony.
