More than half a million Dabawenyos have already benefited from free medicines distributed through Botika ng Bayan branches in Davao City this year, highlighting the City Government’s sustained commitment to public health and affordable medical care.

According to the City Health Office (CHO), at least 585,898 clients have been served as of September 2025. This follows last year’s record of more than 1 million beneficiaries, underscoring the growing reliance of residents on the program.

During the recent I-Speak Media Forum, CHO Pharmacy Head Gemma Pujanes, R.N., RPh, emphasized that the program continues to expand, with procurement of additional supplies ongoing to ensure uninterrupted access to essential medicines.

“We are committed to sustaining this initiative so that more Dabawenyos can avail themselves of free medicines,” Pujanes assured. “We encourage the public to maximize this service and help spread awareness about the availability of Botika ng Bayan.”

The initiative distributes multivitamins and a range of essential medicines to patients with valid prescriptions. Claimants must present a doctor’s prescription along with a valid ID; representatives securing medicines on behalf of family members need both their ID and the patient’s.

Botika ng Bayan outlets are strategically located across the city for easier access: Malasakit Center, Calinan, City Health Main Office, Toril-A, Toril-B, Bunawan, Paquibato, Marilog, Buhangin, Sasa, Tomas Claudio, Jacinto Health Center, and Agdao Health Center.

Empowering Patients Through Generics

In line with Generics Awareness Month, Pujanes also reminded the public of their right to affordable medicine and to be informed about generic alternatives to branded prescriptions.

“Even if you are prescribed medicines with specific brand names, you can always ask the pharmacy for their generic equivalents,” she explained. “This empowers patients to choose wisely, ensuring medicines remain accessible and within their means.”

Building a Healthier Davao

For many low-income families, Botika ng Bayan has become more than just a pharmacy — it is a lifeline, helping ease the burden of medical expenses while ensuring continuity of treatment. With over half a million beneficiaries already served this year, the program shows how government-led health initiatives can make a tangible difference in people’s lives.

As the City Health Office continues to strengthen its services, the message is clear: every Dabawenyo has the right to accessible, affordable, and reliable healthcare.
