CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY — Authorities seized an estimated PhP7,040,000 worth of smuggled cigarettes in a joint police operation in Laguindingan, Misamis Oriental late evening of August 11, 2025.

The Regional Special Operations Unit 10 (RSOU 10), in coordination with the Laguindingan Municipal Police Station (MPS), intercepted the illegal goods at around 10:45 p.m. in Purok 12, Barangay Poblacion.

The suspects, identified only by their aliases “Tata,” 40, a driver, and “Aboy,” 25, a helper—both residents of the area—were caught in the act of preparing and extracting stocks of smuggled cigarettes outside a warehouse.

Police reports revealed that the operation was the result of validated intelligence, casing, and surveillance, confirming that the suspects were involved in storing, transporting, and distributing smuggled cigarettes in Misamis Oriental. The contraband allegedly originated from Zamboanga del Sur, transported via wing van to Laguindingan, and stored in the warehouse for pickup by a buyer from Bukidnon. Authorities said the vehicle carrying the goods typically traveled during early morning hours to avoid detection.

Confiscated during the raid were 101 boxes of “NELSON” brand, 34 boxes of “FORT,” 29 boxes of “ASTRO,” and 12 boxes of “COMMANDO,” with a combined market value exceeding PhP7 million.

The arrested suspects and seized items are now under the custody of the Laguindingan MPS. The cigarettes will be turned over to the Bureau of Customs for proper disposition. Charges for violation of Republic Act 10643, or the Graphic Health Warnings Law, will be filed against the two.

Police Regional Office 10 Regional Director PBGEN Rolindo M. Suguilon commended the successful operation, praising the teamwork of RSOU 10 and Laguindingan MPS.

“I commend the RSOU 10 and Laguindingan MPS for a job well done. PRO10 remains steadfast in its commitment to enforce our laws and ensure that those who attempt to profit from illegal activities will be held accountable,” Suguilon said.

The police official also urged the public to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities, stressing that community cooperation is key to eliminating smuggling and other crimes in Northern Mindanao.
