General Santos City, August 25, 2025 — A shooting incident in Barangay Apopong left one man dead on Monday afternoon, sparking concerns that the attack may be linked to a long-standing family feud known as rido.

Police investigators reported that the incident happened at Purok 8 Extension, just across the public market. The victim sustained multiple gunshot wounds and was declared dead on the spot. At the crime scene, authorities recovered five empty shells from a .45 caliber pistol and one slug believed to have been used in the attack.

The victim was later identified as Salahudin Makayong, a resident of Purok 9, Lanton, Apopong. According to Purok 7 Chairman Fatima Bansawan, who spoke on behalf of the bereaved family, they strongly suspect that rido was the motive behind the killing.

Makayong had only recently moved to General Santos City from Marawi and was married just a month ago. His family described him as still adjusting to his new life in the city before tragedy struck.

Police are now conducting follow-up operations to track down the suspects and establish the full circumstances surrounding the attack.

What is Rido?
Rido is a term used in Mindanao to describe violent clan feuds, often triggered by disputes over land, politics, honor, or personal grievances. Such conflicts can span generations, involving retaliatory killings between families or kinship groups, and are a persistent driver of violence in many Moro communities.

Authorities emphasized that while the investigation is ongoing, the possibility of rido-related violence is being seriously considered as a primary angle.
