KIDAPAWAN CITY, COTABATO — The Provincial Government of Cotabato is intensifying its efforts to develop key agricultural sectors, particularly durian production and dairy farming, in a bid to raise farmers’ income and create more livelihood opportunities for local communities.
On July 2, 2025, the Office of the Provincial Agriculturist (OPAg) convened a meeting with officials of the local government unit of Makilala and the Makilala Integrated Barangays Durian Growers Association. The meeting centered on the upcoming establishment of a durian buying station by The Fruits Tree Marketing, a Panabo City-based exporter of durian. This move is seen as a significant step in linking local growers to the export market.
Governor Emmylou “Lala” Taliño-Mendoza expressed optimism that the entry of investors into Cotabato will further boost the province’s durian industry, one of its leading fruit products. She emphasized that developing this sector could open new economic opportunities and enhance the competitiveness of Cotabato’s agriculture.
In a related development, a high-level meeting was held the following day, July 3, 2025, at the Provincial Governor’s Office in Amas, Kidapawan City, between the Provincial Government and the National Dairy Authority (NDA), led by NDA Administrator Atty. Marcus Antonius T. Andaya. The dialogue focused on strengthening the province’s dairy farming sector and enhancing collaboration between NDA and the provincial government in supporting Cotabato’s farmers.
Representing Governor Mendoza in the meeting were Provincial Advisory Council (PAC) member Amalia J. Datukan and former Board Member Jonathan Tabara. Administrator Andaya announced the arrival of 150 head of dairy cattle to the NDA’s Nucleus Farm in Barangay Aroman, Carmen, Cotabato. This initiative marks the beginning of a pilot program aimed at boosting milk production in Mindanao and contributing to national milk sufficiency.
Also present at the meeting were NDA Deputy Administrator Atty. Gavin Alfredo C. Benitez, DA-12 Agricultural Program Coordinating Officer Rey Domingo, OPAg Acting Head Engr. Elena Ragonton, PAC member Dr. Gary Dondonayos, and personnel from the Office of the Provincial Veterinarian (OPVet).
The series of meetings underscores Cotabato’s commitment to agricultural development through strategic partnerships and support for local farmers.
