BUTUAN CITY, Agusan del Norte — A 50-year-old person with disability (PWD) was shot dead in broad daylight by a gunman who waited for him along a roadside in Barangay Ong Yiu, authorities confirmed on Sunday, June 29, 2025.
The victim, identified as Renato Macaranga, was aboard his improvised wheelchair when he was approached and shot multiple times by an unidentified assailant wielding a .45 caliber pistol. The brutal incident happened two days earlier.
According to reports, Macaranga was a familiar face in the area, often seen navigating his surroundings with the aid of crutches whenever he had to rise from his makeshift wheelchair.
Emergency responders rushed Macaranga to a nearby hospital, but doctors declared him dead on arrival due to multiple gunshot wounds.
Police investigators are now conducting a follow-up operation and reviewing possible leads to determine the motive behind the killing and identify the suspect, who immediately fled the scene after the shooting.
Authorities are also appealing to the public for any information that could help bring justice to the slain PWD.
