CAMP EVANGELISTA, Cagayan de Oro City — A former member of the New People’s Army’s (NPA) Milisya ng Bayan surrendered to authorities and led troops to two hidden arms caches in Brgy. Lydia, La Paz, Agusan del Sur, resulting in the seizure of three high-powered firearms and assorted ammunition on Tuesday, June 3, 2025.

The former rebel, a resident of San Luis, Agusan del Sur, turned himself in to the 26th Infantry Battalion (26IB) under the 4th Infantry (Diamond) Division. Along with his surrender, he brought an AK47 rifle, magazines, and ammunition.

According to Lieutenant Colonel Jose Redentor Gilbuela, commanding officer of 26IB, the former insurgent disclosed the locations of two arms caches shortly after surrendering.

“The arms caches were discovered in two separate locations in Barangay Lydia,” Gilbuela said. “In the first site, troops recovered one M1 Garand rifle. At the second location, they seized another M1 Garand rifle, 80 rounds of ammunition, and eight cartridge clips.”

He added that the former rebel had long been disillusioned by the false promises of the armed movement and had expressed a strong desire to rejoin mainstream society.

“We welcome this development as a step towards lasting peace and security in our area of responsibility,” Gilbuela stated.

Major General Michele B. Anayron Jr., commander of the 4th Infantry Division, also lauded the surrender, describing it as further proof of the effectiveness of the government’s peace and reintegration efforts.

“The increasing number of NPA surrenderers highlights the success of programs like the Enhanced Comprehensive Local Integration Program (ECLIP), which supports former rebels in starting anew,” Anayron said. “We call on those who are still in the mountains to rethink their situation and return to their families and communities.”

Military officials continue to encourage active insurgents to surrender peacefully and avail themselves of government assistance aimed at helping them reintegrate into society.
