CAMP SIONGCO, Awang, DOS, Maguindanao del Norte – A known bomb expert from a local terrorist group has finally surrendered to government forces through the 1st Brigade Combat Team (1BCT) on May 21, 2025, in the barangay of Pigcalagan, Sultan Kudarat, Maguindanao del Norte.
Brigadier General Jose Vladimir Cagara, Commander of 1BCT, confirmed the surrender but withheld the identity of the 35-year-old former rebel for security reasons.
The surrenderer voluntarily gave himself up due to increasing fear for his safety, driven by intensified military operations targeting their group. He also cited extreme hunger, exhaustion, and hardship from constantly hiding in the mountains and forests.
Along with his return to the folds of the law, the former bomb expert also turned over war materials, including a Uzi 9mm submachine gun and a 60mm improvised explosive device (IED).
Major General Donald M. Gumiran, Commander of the 6th Infantry (Kampilan) Division and Joint Task Force Central, lauded the decision. “The surrender of a skilled bomb expert is a significant victory in our fight against terrorism. Instead of spreading violence, he chose the path of peace. This proves that it’s never too late for those seeking change and a new beginning. May this serve as an inspiration to others who have lost their way — there is still a place for them in our society. The government remains ready to accept anyone who sincerely wishes to turn their life around for the betterment of our country,” he stated.
The 6ID and JTF-Central continue to call on the remaining members of the armed group to lay down their arms and avail of the government’s reintegration program for a peaceful and progressive future.
