This May, SM City Mindpro is turning up the summer heat — not with sunbathing and beach trips, but with brainpower, discipline, and sweat! In partnership with the Zamboanga City Sports Division, the mall is hosting its Summer Learn to Play Program — a dynamic lineup of free activities that challenge both the mind and body through chess and karatedo.
Held at the Activity Area on Level 4, this month-long program isn’t your average mall attraction. It’s a call to all curious kids, aspiring athletes, and eager learners to level up their skills, meet new friends, and spend the school break doing something truly meaningful.
Checkmate Your Summer Boredom
From Monday to Wednesday, the spotlight is on chess. Guided by friendly instructors, young minds learn how to plan ahead, stay focused, and think critically — all while having fun. Whether you’re a complete beginner or just want to sharpen your skills, the Learn to Play Chess sessions from 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM promise a supportive environment where future grandmasters are born.
“It’s more than just a game. Chess teaches patience, strategy, and resilience — qualities that serve children well beyond the board,” said one of the program’s facilitators.
Kickstart Discipline with Karatedo
On Thursdays to Saturdays, the mood shifts from quiet concentration to high-energy movement with Karatedo classes from 10:00 AM to 12:00 NN. Open to all beginners, this martial arts discipline helps build confidence, balance, and self-control in a fun yet focused way. No need for prior experience — just come with the willingness to learn and move!
“Through chess and karatedo, we’re helping develop both mental and physical agility while promoting a culture of active learning,” shared Aileen Ann Villa-Enriquez, Mall Manager of SM City Mindpro. “It’s our way of making summer both fun and enriching.”
More Than Just Play
What makes this program special is its accessibility. Both chess and karatedo sessions are completely free — a rare chance for kids and teens to explore new interests without financial barriers. It’s an inclusive space where anyone can try something new, get inspired, and even discover a hidden talent.
With limited slots, early registration is encouraged. Parents can easily sign up their kids through the SM Malls Online app, making participation just a few clicks away.
