Davao City – May 20, 2025 — In a move to boost digital inclusion and public access to online resources, the 20th City Council of Davao City approved an ordinance for the establishment of the Davao City Public Internet Center during its 18th Regular Session on Tuesday.

The center, to be located within the iconic People’s Park, is envisioned as a two-storey facility equipped with computer units that residents can use for free. Surrounding the facility will be a public WiFi zone, providing free internet access to Dabawenyos.

Spearheaded by Councilor Bonz Andre Militar, Chairperson of the Sangguniang Panlungsod’s Committee on Information Technology, the initiative aims to respond to the city’s growing need for accessible and affordable connectivity, particularly for underserved communities. It is also designed to support online research, skills training, and digital upskilling, particularly for job-seekers looking to enter the Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) industry.

“This project is a big step toward making digital access a reality for every Dabawenyo,” said Councilor Militar in an interview. He emphasized that the services offered by the center will be free of charge. However, users will be required to register as members of the Davao City Library and Information Center (DCLIC), as the Internet Center complements the library’s existing free computer access services.

The Public Internet Center will have a total area of 746.38 square meters and will house the necessary facilities and computer equipment. Funding for its construction has been included in this year’s annual supplementary budget.

The project forms part of City Mayor Sebastian Duterte’s broader digitalization campaign, which aims to make education, information, and essential online services more accessible to the public.

With construction expected to begin soon, the Public Internet Center is poised to become a key digital hub in Davao City, fostering inclusive growth and bridging the digital divide across communities.
