Camp Siongco, Awang, Datu Odin Sinsuat, Maguindanao del Norte – May 1, 2025 — A total of 27 loose firearms were turned over to the military on Wednesday, strengthening the campaign against the proliferation of unauthorized weapons across several provinces and municipalities in Central and South-Central Mindanao.

According to Lt. Col. Erwin Dumaghan, Commanding Officer of the 40th Infantry Battalion, the recent turnover is a result of the intensified campaign in coordination with the Philippine National Police and with strong support from local communities.

Ten of the firearms were surrendered in Tugunan, one of the municipalities under the Special Geographic Area (SGA) of the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM). The remaining 17 firearms came from the municipalities of Pikit and Mlang in Cotabato, Pagalungan and Datu Montawal in Maguindanao del Sur, and Kapalawan in SGA-BARMM.

The firearms were formally presented to Brig. Gen. Ricky P. Bunayog, Commander of the 602nd Infantry Brigade. The ceremonial turnover was witnessed by Pikit Mayor Sumulong K. Sultan, Cotabato Provincial Police Director Col. Gilberto B. Tuzon, and Pikit Municipal Police Station Chief Lt. Col. Tristan Vergel J. Sablada.

“The successful turnover of firearms under the Small Arms and Light Weapons (SALW) management program demonstrates the continued collaboration, coordination, and support of local government units in our pursuit of peace and order,” said Brig. Gen. Bunayog. “This is only possible if we eliminate loose firearms that can be used in crimes and violence.”

Maj. Gen. Donald M. Gumiran, Commander of the 6th Infantry Division and Joint Task Force Central, reiterated the military’s commitment to support the government’s disarmament initiatives.

“The 6ID and JTF Central stand with you in implementing this crucial program. Together with other government agencies and local officials, we hope this initiative leads to sustained peace, security, and development in Central and South-Central Mindanao,” he stated.

Military authorities continue to call on the public to cooperate with law enforcement agencies to help rid communities of illegal firearms and maintain lasting peace in the region.
