In preparation for the 2025 National and Local Elections, Western Mindanao Command (WestMinCom) Chief Lt. Gen. Antonio Nafarrete led a key security meeting with the Joint Task Force (JTF) Central at Camp Siongco to assess and enhance security and contingency measures across critical areas in Mindanao.
The activity forms part of a broader initiative to ensure a peaceful, secure, and credible electoral process in regions historically marred by election-related violence. JTF Central’s area of responsibility spans the provinces of Maguindanao del Norte, Maguindanao del Sur, Sultan Kudarat, South Cotabato, and portions of North Cotabato—areas flagged as election hotspots due to previous security incidents.
During the meeting, JTF Central presented its comprehensive plans to address potential election threats. Lt. Gen. Nafarrete emphasized the importance of adaptive strategies, proactive coordination with the Commission on Elections (COMELEC), the Philippine National Police (PNP), and neighboring military units, and maintaining the military’s nonpartisan role throughout the election period.
“Professionalism and neutrality must guide all our actions,” said Lt. Gen. Nafarrete, stressing the Armed Forces’ role in protecting the democratic process. “Our duty is to ensure the safety of the people and the integrity of the elections.”
Aside from reviewing security protocols, the command also tackled logistical needs and scenario planning, including potential threats of violence, election sabotage, and civil unrest. Troop readiness and deployment capacities were also discussed to ensure that all units can respond quickly and effectively across their respective areas of operation.
Following the session at Camp Siongco, Lt. Gen. Nafarrete is set to visit other JTF units under WestMinCom to oversee similar preparatory efforts and ensure uniformity in the command’s election security posture.
WestMinCom’s proactive stance underscores its unwavering commitment to uphold democratic values, safeguard public trust, and carry out its constitutional duties in support of a credible electoral process.
