Koronadal City — The City Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO) of Koronadal has intensified its community-based wildlife conservation efforts through a series of Information, Education, and Communication (IEC) campaigns and a tree-planting activity aimed at raising environmental awareness and promoting biodiversity preservation.
The recent initiative took place in Sitio El Gawel, Barangay Saravia, and gathered around 35 participants from the local community. The activity focused on educating residents about the importance of wildlife conservation and the sustainable management of local ecosystems, while also engaging them in reforestation efforts.
According to CENRO, these activities are part of the city’s broader environmental protection strategy that emphasizes grassroots participation. By involving local communities, the office aims to foster a deeper understanding of the role of wildlife in maintaining ecological balance and to empower citizens as stewards of their natural surroundings.
The Importance of Wildlife Conservation
Wildlife conservation is vital not only for the survival of various species but also for sustaining human life. Healthy ecosystems depend on the balance provided by wildlife — from pollination of crops and pest control to water purification and climate regulation. However, human activities such as deforestation, pollution, and illegal hunting continue to threaten biodiversity.
Community-based conservation, like the one initiated by CENRO, plays a crucial role in reversing these threats. It allows communities to directly participate in protecting their environment, ensuring that conservation practices are culturally appropriate, sustainable, and grounded in local knowledge.
Through efforts like IEC campaigns and tree planting, CENRO is helping to build a culture of environmental responsibility and encouraging long-term ecological resilience in Koronadal City.
