On March 4, 2025, Davao City solemnly commemorated the 22nd anniversary of the tragic bombing at the Old Sasa Airport—a harrowing event that claimed 22 lives and injured 113 others. The City Government of Davao, through the City Social Welfare and Development Office (CSWDO), organized a modest ceremony led by Rev. Fr. Emmanuel Gonzaga. Representatives such as 2nd District City Councilor Atty. Diosdado Angelo R. Mahipus Jr., CSWDO Department Head Julie P. Dayaday, Public Safety and Security Office Head P/Lt. Col. Angel B. Sumagaysay (Ret.), Task Force Davao Commander Col. Rodrigo E. Mariña Jr., CSWDO Buhangin B District Head Ms. Jackielou Roble, members of the Sasa Barangay Council, and the victims and their families were in attendance. The ceremony included a brief offering and prayer for the victims, followed by the distribution of tokens and food packs to the victims and their families.

The bombing occurred at 5:20 p.m. on March 4, 2003, when a bomb concealed in a backpack detonated in the crowded waiting area of Francisco Bangoy International Airport (also known as Davao International Airport). The explosion resulted in 22 fatalities and injured over 100 individuals, causing significant damage to the airport facility. The Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF), an Islamic secessionist militant group, was suspected of orchestrating the attack; however, the group denied involvement. citeturn0search11
In the aftermath of the bombing, the City Government of Davao established Task Force Davao, a dedicated security unit aimed at preventing similar incidents in the future. The CSWDO has been providing continuous support to the victims’ families, including educational assistance. As of 2023, 14 beneficiaries have completed tertiary education under this program. citeturn0search0
