Makati City, Philippines – Malaysia and Mindanao reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening economic and diplomatic relations during an Iftar celebration hosted by His Excellency Dato’ Abdul Malik Melvin Castelino, Ambassador of Malaysia to the Philippines, on Tuesday evening. The event took place at Rumah Malaysia, the ambassador’s official residence in Makati City, and was attended by Secretary Leo Tereso Magno, Chairperson of the Mindanao Development Authority (MinDA).

The Iftar, a traditional observance during Ramadan, also provided an opportunity for a courtesy meeting between Malaysian officials and MinDA representatives. The discussions revolved around deepening bilateral cooperation, particularly within the framework of the Brunei Darussalam-Indonesia-Malaysia-Philippines East ASEAN Growth Area (BIMP-EAGA).

“Let this gathering be a reminder that our strength lies in our unity, whether in fostering economic prosperity, championing sustainability within ASEAN, or standing firm against injustices faced by our Muslim brothers and sisters worldwide,” Ambassador Castelino said.

One of the key highlights of the discussion was Malaysia’s role in MinDA’s trade missions for 2025, emphasizing shared interests in trade, investment, and regional connectivity. Secretary Magno underscored Malaysia’s significance as a partner in Mindanao’s development, particularly in sectors such as agribusiness, infrastructure, halal industries, and renewable energy.

“MinDA remains committed to fostering inclusivity and supporting the economic and social empowerment of the Muslim community in Mindanao, in partnership with Malaysia and the rest of the EAGA sub-region,” Magno stated.

With both parties expressing optimism, the partnership between Malaysia and Mindanao is set to create greater economic opportunities, strengthening ties that will shape the region’s future growth.
