SOUTH COTABATO – A tree-planting initiative aimed at restoring the Strict Protection Zone (SPZ) of Mount Matutum Protected Landscape (MMPL) saw the planting of at least 200 indigenous tree seedlings on March 18 in Sitio Glandang, Barangay Kablon, Municipality of Tupi, South Cotabato.
The reforestation effort covered a 0.5-hectare area within the protected zone, planting 75 Bayok, 75 Nato, and 50 Molave seedlings. The initiative seeks to rehabilitate portions of the SPZ, including areas previously abandoned and locations where individuals voluntarily removed their unauthorized establishments.
Spearheaded by the Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office (PENRO) of South Cotabato through the Protected Area Management Office (PAMO)-MMPL, the activity was carried out in collaboration with the enforcement division of the regional office and the Municipal Environment and Natural Resources Office (MENRO) of Tupi.
Atty. Florencio C. Amago Jr., chief of the enforcement division, emphasized the importance of prioritizing the restoration of the area for future tree-growing activities. Meanwhile, PENR Officer Rosalinda B. Cortez, Ph.D., extended her gratitude to MENRO-Tupi, PENRO South Cotabato, PAMO-MMPL staff, and other stakeholders for their support and participation, which contributed to the initiative’s success.
The activity underscores the continued efforts of government agencies and environmental advocates in preserving the ecological integrity of Mount Matutum, ensuring the sustainability of its biodiversity and natural resources.
