The City Government of Zamboanga, under the leadership of Mayor John Dalipe, paid tribute to the city’s first and only senator, Roseller T. Lim, on Sunday, February 9. Officially designated as Dia de Roseller T. Lim, this year’s celebration marks the 110th birth anniversary of the late senator, who is revered as the “Great Filibuster.”
With the theme “Luz de Ley y Justicia” (Light of Law and Justice), the commemoration underscored the enduring legacy of Sen. Lim. Mayor Dalipe, in his speech, called upon Zamboangueños to uphold Lim’s ideals, emphasizing the need to strengthen institutions, protect freedom, and move forward as a city thriving in peace, unity, and unwavering justice.
“Igual con Senator Roseller Lim, carga quita na di aton pecho hinde lang el orgullo de queda un Zamboangueño, si no el amor para na di aton responsibilidad. Let us be the ‘Luz de Ley y Justicia,’ not just in words but in action,” Mayor Dalipe declared during the wreath-laying ceremony at the R.T. Lim Monument in Normal Road, Baliwasan.
The commemorative event, organized by the Office of the City Tourism, in collaboration with JCI Zamboanga and Ateneo de Zamboanga University (AdZU), commenced with a solemn Mass officiated by Fr. Salvador Wee of the Society of Jesus at the Carmelite Monastery, R.T. Lim Boulevard.
The wreath-laying rites gathered relatives of the late senator, key officials, and representatives from various agencies, reflecting the community’s deep respect for Sen. Lim’s contributions to the country.
One of the highlights of the occasion took place at Badjao Hall, Garden Orchid Hotel, where five Outstanding Zamboangueño Young Leaders (FOZYL) received the 19th Sen. Roseller T. Lim Award. The award honors individuals who embody the principles, values, and unwavering commitment to leadership and service that defined Sen. Lim’s career.
The event served as a powerful reminder of Sen. Roseller Lim’s significant role in shaping the nation’s legislative landscape and his lasting impact on the people of Zamboanga. Through this annual commemoration, the city continues to celebrate his dedication to justice, integrity, and the unwavering pursuit of good governance.
