Davao City, Philippines – In a significant operation on January 16, 2025, Task Force Davao Sirawan Joint Checkpoint personnel successfully intercepted smuggled cigarettes valued at an estimated PhP 9,861,790.00 in Barangay Sirawan, Toril, Davao City.
The operation unfolded when checkpoint personnel intercepted a close van that was flagged for irregularities, including suspicions that it did not belong to a legitimate courier company. During a routine inspection, the van’s driver was unable to provide proper documentation proving his connection with the courier company. This lack of credentials was corroborated by the area manager of the said company.
The discovery prompted checkpoint personnel to detain the driver and immediately notify the Toril Police Station (PS8), Davao City Police Office (DCPO), and the Bureau of Customs for assistance. Upon further investigation, the authorities found that the van was carrying 251 boxes of MODERN (Red) cigarettes, with a total market value of PhP 9,861,790.00.
The driver was subsequently arrested and is now under the custody of Toril Police Station (PS8), DCPO, pending further legal proceedings. The confiscated cigarettes have been turned over to the Bureau of Customs for inventory and proper disposition. Authorities are preparing charges against the suspect under Republic Act 10863, also known as the Customs Modernization and Tariff Act.
PBGEN Leon Victor Z. Rosete, Regional Director of Police Regional Office 11 (PRO 11), lauded the dedication and vigilance of Task Force Davao, the personnel of Toril Police Station, and the Bureau of Customs for their collaborative efforts in the operation. He also highlighted the essential role played by the community in aiding the interception of smuggled goods.
“Arresting smugglers is crucial to protecting the local economy, public health, and security,” PBGEN Rosete stated. “Smuggling deprives the government of tax revenue needed for public services and harms legitimate businesses through unfair competition.”
This successful operation underscores the importance of continued vigilance and inter-agency cooperation in safeguarding the economy and public welfare. The authorities reaffirm their commitment to combating smuggling and other illegal activities in the region.
