Davao City, December 30, 2024 – A case of Double Frustrated Murder has been filed against Police Corporal Alfred Dawatan Sabas after a violent incident aboard a Mindanao Star Bus and at a police checkpoint left one civilian dead and two police officers injured.
The complaint, docketed as NPS NR XI-04-INQ-24I-00287, was filed before the Office of the Provincial Prosecutor in Digos City and subscribed by Atty. Jema Lavilla-Rosalem, Assistant Provincial Prosecutor for Davao del Sur. Additional charges related to the civilian’s death are set to be filed in North Cotabato.
The incident occurred early on December 28, 2024, when Sabas allegedly shot and killed a civilian inside a bus traveling from Barangay Batasan, Makilala, North Cotabato, to Davao City. Subsequently, Sabas fired on two police officers manning a border checkpoint in Barangay New Opon, Magsaysay, Davao del Sur. The wounded officers were rushed to Digos City Hospital for treatment.
The suspect fled the scene with his live-in partner but was arrested later that day following a swift and coordinated hot pursuit operation. Drug screening conducted by the Regional Forensic Unit 11 confirmed that Sabas tested positive for illegal substances. He is currently in the custody of the Magsaysay Municipal Police Station.
Recognition for Injured Officers
The injured officers received the Medalya ng Sugatang Magiting (PNP Wounded Medal) for their bravery and dedication to duty under dangerous circumstances. The medals were awarded by PCOL Renante C. Cabico, OIC, DRDO/ACRS, along with PCOL Joseph A. Fajardo Jr., FC, RMFB 11, and PLTCOL Jenette O. Garcia, Deputy Chief, RPRMD.
Each officer also received financial assistance totaling PHP 150,000: PHP 100,000 from PNP Chief PGEN Rommel Francisco D. Marbil and PHP 50,000 from Regional Director PBGEN Leon Victor Z. Rosete.
PBGEN Rosete praised the officers’ heroism, stating, “Their bravery and unwavering dedication to duty, even in the face of great danger, deserve the highest recognition. These officers serve as an inspiration, reminding us of the sacrifices made by those who wear the uniform to protect our communities.”
PNP Chief PGEN Marbil echoed these sentiments, assuring the injured officers that the organization remains steadfast in supporting personnel who display acts of heroism.
