Davao del Sur – December 31, 2024

Police Corporal (PCpl) Alfred Dawatan Sabas, the suspect in a series of violent incidents that left a security guard dead and two police officers wounded, has tested positive for illegal drugs. This revelation was confirmed by the Regional Forensic Unit 11 following a drug test conducted in the aftermath of his arrest.

The results come just days after Sabas went on a rampage early Saturday morning, December 28, triggering widespread outrage and calls for accountability within the Philippine National Police (PNP). Sabas, who was off duty at the time, is now facing charges of murder and two counts of frustrated murder.

The Violent Incident

The series of events began aboard a Mindanao Star bus in Barangay Batasan, Makilala, North Cotabato. Sabas, traveling with his wife, reportedly got into an altercation with a fellow passenger, Reynaldo Bigno Jr., a resident of Sitio Flortam. The situation escalated, and Sabas allegedly pulled out his firearm, shooting Bigno in the head. The victim died instantly, leaving fellow passengers and authorities in shock.

Sabas then commandeered the bus, directing the driver to proceed to a checkpoint in Barangay New Opon, Magsaysay, Davao del Sur. Upon arrival, Sabas allegedly opened fire on PCpl. Kenth Maurith Ramos and Patrolman Russel Love Tapia, who were manning the checkpoint. Both officers sustained injuries and were rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment. They are reportedly in stable condition.

Arrest and Drug Test Results

Sabas fled the scene but was apprehended later that morning during a hot pursuit operation. Reports suggest he was under the influence of alcohol during the incidents. The confirmation of drug use has further deepened the outrage surrounding the case, raising questions about the PNP’s screening and monitoring procedures for its personnel.

Community and Police Response

The violent spree has left the local community reeling. Family members of Reynaldo Bigno Jr. are demanding justice, while residents of Makilala and Magsaysay express concern over the accountability and conduct of law enforcement officers.

In response, the Police Regional Office 12 strongly condemned Sabas’ actions. “Such behavior does not reflect the values and standards of the Philippine National Police,” said a spokesperson. Administrative charges have been filed against Sabas alongside the criminal cases.

The incident has also prompted calls for stricter drug testing protocols and psychological evaluations for police personnel to prevent similar incidents in the future.

Moving Forward

Authorities have assured the public of a thorough investigation. “We are committed to ensuring justice for the victims and accountability for the suspect,” said an official from the Police Regional Office 11. The case has also reignited discussions on the need for comprehensive reforms within the PNP to address issues of misconduct and substance abuse among its ranks.

Meanwhile, the families of the victims and the injured officers continue to seek justice and support as they recover from the tragic events. Further updates are expected as the investigation unfolds.
