Pahamuddin, BARMM – The Moro Islamic Liberation Front Coordinating Committee on the Cessation of Hostilities (MILF-CCCH) has strongly denied claims made by the military labeling members of the Bangsamoro Islamic Armed Forces (BIAF-MILF) as a lawless group. The statement came after the Philippine Army’s 34th Infantry Battalion confiscated firearms in Lower Pangangkalan, Pahamuddin, on January 20, 2025.
Abusaima Husain, a representative of the MILF-CCCH, clarified that those disarmed were legitimate members of the BIAF-MILF, contrary to the military’s claim of dealing with criminal elements. “These are disciplined members of the MILF, committed to peace and adhering to the agreements in place,” Husain stated, adding that the firearms were stored securely in compliance with MILF protocols and the peace agreement.
The military reported seizing 19 high-powered firearms and ammunition during the operation, which was conducted as part of the enforcement of the Commission on Elections’ (COMELEC) Gun Ban. According to the 34th IB, the operation aimed to prevent election-related violence following reports of an armed group in the area.
Allegations of Criminal Activity Disputed
Husain also refuted allegations that the group was involved in livestock theft, describing such claims as “blatant lies.” He emphasized that there had been no reported incidents of theft in Pahamuddin and that the individuals involved were dedicated Mujahideen who uphold their values.
“This baseless accusation not only tarnishes the reputation of our members but also undermines the trust established through the peace process,” Husain said. He warned that such incidents could erode the confidence of the MILF in the military if repeated.
Violation of Peace Agreement Alleged
Husain expressed concern over what he described as a violation of the existing peace agreement between the Government of the Philippines (GPH) and the MILF. He urged the military to return the confiscated firearms, citing the importance of respecting the agreement and ensuring the safety of BIAF-MILF members who could not leave the area due to its status as an MILF stronghold.
Husain appealed to MILF members to remain calm and allow their leadership to address the issue diplomatically. “We must stay united and uphold the peace that we have worked hard to achieve,” he added.
Military Operation Context
The military, for its part, defended the operation, stating it was carried out to maintain public safety during the election period. The confiscated cache included six M4 rifles, six M16 rifles, and other firearms, along with over 700 rounds of ammunition.
The 34th IB asserted that their actions were in line with COMELEC’s Resolution No. 11067, which enforces a gun ban during the election period. They also emphasized their commitment to ensuring a secure environment for the elections.
The incident highlights the complexities of peacebuilding in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM), where efforts to maintain security and uphold agreements must go hand in hand to sustain trust and cooperation between the parties involved.
