Tantangan, South Cotabato — A 38-year-old man was arrested for violating the Commission on Elections (COMELEC) gun ban in Purok Tagumpay, Barangay Bukay, Tantangan, South Cotabato, around 11:58 a.m. on January 16, 2025.
Police Major Romeo S. Albano Jr., Chief of the Tantangan Municipal Police Station, identified the suspect as “Reynante,” a married resident of the area.
According to reports, the Tantangan Police received information from a concerned citizen that the suspect was armed and causing trouble in the neighborhood.
Responding officers found the suspect drinking alcohol outside his home while in possession of a 12-gauge homemade shotgun loaded with one bullet, along with a magazine containing two additional rounds.
When questioned about the firearm’s license, the suspect failed to present the necessary documents. Despite this, he voluntarily surrendered after being approached by the police. Authorities ensured the suspect was informed of his constitutional rights following his surrender.
The suspect will face charges for violating Republic Act 10591, also known as the Comprehensive Firearms and Ammunition Regulation Act, in connection with the Omnibus Election Code (COMELEC Gun Ban).
The Philippine National Police (PNP) reiterated its strict enforcement of the nationwide gun ban, which will be in effect from January 12 to June 11, 2025, for the upcoming National and Local Elections (NLE). The gun ban prohibits carrying firearms or deadly weapons in public places, including buildings, streets, parks, private vehicles, and public transport.
Authorities continue to urge the public to report any violations to ensure the safety and security of the election period.
