Davao City – A businessman from Placer Poblacion, Surigao del Norte, known by the alias “Botyok,” is under investigation for allegedly violating Davao City’s strict firecracker ban. The incident, which involved a fireworks display to welcome the New Year, was captured on video by a netizen in the NHA Bangkal area of the city.

The Davao City Police Office (DCPO) first examined the case on January 1, 2025, after remnants of what appeared to be burnt firecrackers were discovered on the roadside. However, a follow-up investigation on January 2 revealed new information from two witnesses, suggesting the fireworks were ignited in a riprap area near a creek, approximately 10 to 15 meters away from the initial site of inquiry.

According to the witnesses, at around 12:50 a.m. on January 1, the suspect was seen carrying a backpack to the riprap area. Moments later, he lit a pyrotechnic device, leading to a fireworks display. The witnesses claimed they tried to stop “Botyok” but were ignored.

Upon further inspection of the site identified by the witnesses, authorities recovered remnants of the fireworks, which have been secured as evidence. Reports indicate that the suspect returned to Surigao later on January 1.

Davao City enforces a comprehensive ban on firecrackers and fireworks to ensure public safety and reduce the risk of fire-related incidents. Violators face penalties, including fines and possible imprisonment.

Authorities continue their investigation and are coordinating with officials in Surigao to locate the suspect. Meanwhile, the police remind the public to report any violations to maintain the city’s safety and order.
