Barira, Maguindanao del Norte – Two suspects were apprehended during a checkpoint operation conducted by Barira Municipal Police Station (MPS) on December 22, 2024, at Sitio Pedtad, Brgy. Lipawan. The operation, led by Acting Chief of Police PCPT Joel C. Albao, resulted in the confiscation of illegal substances and other personal items from the suspects.

The incident occurred when the suspects, aboard a vehicle, failed to stop at the checkpoint. Despite being signaled to halt by the last police officer manning the checkpoint, the suspects initially ignored the command. They were eventually forced to comply and were subjected to a visual search.

According to police reports, the driver (Suspect 1) displayed nervous behavior, which raised the suspicions of the officers. While approaching the other police personnel, the driver inadvertently dropped an item from his pocket. Upon inspection, the item was identified as a small heat-sealed plastic sachet containing a white crystalline substance believed to be methamphetamine hydrochloride, commonly known as “shabu.” The sachet had an estimated weight of 0.02 grams and a Dangerous Drugs Board (DDB) value of PHP 500.

Further search led to the seizure of additional items, including one cellular phone, a wallet containing PHP 700 in cash, and identification documents.

The suspects were immediately placed under arrest and informed of their constitutional rights, as outlined in the Miranda Doctrine and the Anti-Torture Act. The confiscated items and the suspects are currently in the custody of Barira MPS, while appropriate charges for violating Republic Act 9165, or the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002, are being prepared.

PCPT Joel C. Albao commended the efforts of the checkpoint personnel, emphasizing the importance of vigilance in maintaining peace and order in the community. This operation underscores the commitment of Barira MPS to combat illegal drug activities in the region.
