Datu Odin Sinsuat, Maguindanao del Norte – A purok leader and businesswoman was shot dead on Wednesday night, December 26, 2024, while tending to her store in Sitio Broce, Barangay Tamontaka.
The victim, identified as Marissa Barrozo, was a prominent figure in the community, serving as a purok leader and an active officer of the San Carlos Borromeo Parish. According to police reports, Barrozo was standing outside her store, which sells various goods and bottled water along the highway, when two unidentified men approached her. One of the suspects opened fire, hitting Barrozo multiple times and causing her instant death.
Witnesses reported that the suspects fled the scene quickly on a motorcycle, leaving residents in shock and panic.
In a statement posted on Facebook, Barangay Tamontaka Chairwoman Bai Ivierose Sinsuat expressed her grief and extended condolences to Barrozo’s family. She also acknowledged Barrozo’s contributions and dedication to their barangay.
The motive behind the killing remains unclear. According to Police Brigadier General Romeo Juan Macapaz, director of the Police Regional Office–Bangsamoro Autonomous Region (PRO-BAR), investigators are exploring possible angles, including her roles as a community leader and businesswoman.
Authorities are continuing their investigation to identify the suspects and determine the reason behind the fatal shooting. Meanwhile, residents of Sitio Broce and the surrounding areas mourn the loss of a leader who was well-respected in the community.
Police are urging anyone with information about the incident to come forward to aid in their investigation.
