In a robust demonstration of environmental stewardship, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) Community Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO) of Glan, in partnership with various stakeholders, planted over 130 indigenous tree seedlings along the riverbanks of Sitio Malaygang, Barangay Sapu Masla, Malapatan, on November 26. The initiative marked the culmination of this year’s National Clean Air Month and Environmental Awareness Month.

This effort is part of the RIVERs for Life program for Sapu Masla River, which aims to rehabilitate and conserve vital waterways while fostering community involvement. The tree-growing activity brought together representatives from the local government unit (LGU) of Malapatan, barangay LGU, law enforcement agencies, people’s organizations, and members of the community. The planted seedlings are expected to not only strengthen the riverbanks against erosion but also improve air quality and biodiversity in the area.

Empowering Communities Through Action and Awareness

Beyond tree planting, the CENRO Glan also handed over four Material Recovery Systems (MRS) to Barangay Sapu Masla to support the community’s waste management initiatives. These systems are designed to streamline the segregation, recycling, and disposal of waste, promoting a cleaner and more sustainable environment.

To further reinforce the message of environmental responsibility, an information drive was conducted alongside the activities. Topics discussed included the impacts of air pollution, the benefits of tree-growing activities, and practical steps to improve air quality, such as adopting proper waste management, carpooling, and supporting clean energy sources.

“The MRS and information sessions are just as important as the trees we planted today,” said a representative from CENRO Glan. “They equip the community with tools and knowledge to maintain a healthier environment for the long term.”

A Commitment to Future Generations

These initiatives reaffirm the collective commitment of the stakeholders to safeguard the environment and promote sustainable practices. By actively involving communities in programs like RIVERs for Life, the DENR-CENRO Glan seeks to instill a sense of responsibility among residents, ensuring the Sapu Masla River is preserved for generations to come.

Local leaders expressed optimism about the impact of the projects. “This is a testament to the power of collaboration,” said a barangay official. “When agencies, organizations, and communities come together, we can achieve meaningful change for our environment.”

As the trees take root and the MRS become part of everyday life in Sapu Masla, the efforts of November 26 serve as a reminder of the importance of collective action in addressing environmental challenges. Through activities like these, the seeds of sustainability are planted—not just in the ground, but in the hearts and minds of the people.
