A tragic incident has once again highlighted the escalating violence against Indigenous Peoples in Maguindanao del Sur. Two members of the Dulangan Manobo tribe lost their lives, while two others were injured in an ambush carried out by unidentified gunmen in Datu Hoffer Ampatuan.

In a statement issued by the Ministry of Indigenous Peoples’ Affairs (MIPA), Minister Melanio Ulama identified the victims as Cita Angan and Ricky Tapioc, who were killed in the attack. Saber Zacaria and Kutang Tilok sustained injuries but survived. All four victims are members of the Dulangan Manobo tribe.

According to reports, the victims had just retrieved relief goods from the municipal hall of Datu Hoffer Ampatuan. As they were returning home, they were ambushed and shot by still-unidentified assailants at Sitio Iskagit, Barangay Sayap, around 11:40 AM on December 19, 2024.

Minister Ulama’s statement also recalled a previous incident involving the same community. On December 7, 2024, Bayawan Angan, husband of Cita Angan, was killed in a similar attack at Sitio Kukor, Barangay Mantao, Datu Hoffer Ampatuan. Reports suggest land conflict as a potential motive for these attacks.

MIPA strongly condemned these brutal killings, describing them as “unconscionable and indefensible acts of violence.” The agency urged law enforcement authorities and concerned agencies to take immediate action to ensure the safety of Indigenous Peoples in the area. Minister Ulama called for justice, emphasizing that those responsible should not be granted impunity.

“We extend our heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and the entire Dulangan Manobo tribe,” the statement concluded.

Authorities are currently investigating the incident, while the Indigenous community continues to call for greater protection and action against such recurring acts of violence.
