Patikul, Sulu – December 21, 2024

The Bangsamoro Human Rights Commission (BHRC) Sulu Provincial Office has issued a strong statement condemning a series of violent incidents that have recently shaken the province and surrounding areas. These heinous acts, including the killing of a 12-year-old female student in Kalimayahan Village, Latih, Patikul, and the murder of a father and his son at Km 2 Kajatian, Indanan, have been described as attacks on the very fabric of the community.

“These reprehensible crimes rob us of innocent lives and sow fear among our people,” the BHRC stated. “They have no place in a just and humane society.”

In addition to these tragedies, the Commission also condemned the recent ambush targeting Sulu Provincial Election Officer Atty. Vidzfar A. Julie in Zamboanga City. While Atty. Julie survived the attack unscathed, the BHRC emphasized the gravity of the assault. “Such a brazen act of violence is an affront not only to an individual but to all public servants who dedicate themselves to upholding the integrity of our democratic institutions,” the statement read.

Call for Justice and Accountability

The BHRC called on law enforcement authorities to conduct swift, thorough, and impartial investigations into these incidents, ensuring that those responsible are brought to justice. “Justice must be served, and accountability must prevail,” the Commission asserted.

The Commission also urged the public to remain calm and vigilant during these trying times. Stressing the importance of accurate information, the BHRC advised against spreading unverified reports that could cause unnecessary panic and confusion. “Let us rely only on credible sources and report any suspicious activities to the proper authorities,” the statement urged.

Commitment to Human Rights and Peace

Reaffirming its dedication to human rights, the BHRC Sulu Provincial Office vowed to continue its efforts to protect and promote justice, dignity, and peace in the region. “We remain steadfast in ensuring that justice is served and peace is preserved in our beloved province,” the statement concluded.

The BHRC also called for collective action in fostering a society where violence is eradicated, and human rights prevail for all. The Commission’s appeal comes as Sulu continues to grapple with challenges to peace and security in the region.

The BHRC’s condemnation serves as a call to action for all sectors of society to stand united against violence and work together to build a peaceful and just community.
