Around 50,000 residents gathered at the Duterte family’s ancestral home on Taal Street, Central Park Subdivision in Bangkal, Davao City, for the annual gift-giving event led by former President Rodrigo Duterte. The celebration, known as “Pahalipay sa Taal,” commenced on Christmas Eve and continued into December 25, providing a festive atmosphere filled with generosity and camaraderie.

The event was graced by both the elder Duterte and his daughter, Vice President Sara Duterte, on Wednesday afternoon. According to social media posts from Sonshine Media Network International and FPRRD Supporters, the father-daughter tandem brought holiday cheer to the attendees, many of whom had lined up since dawn to partake in the celebration.

Gift-Giving Highlights

The Davao City Police Office (DCPO) reported that the crowd swelled to around 50,000 by the afternoon. Attendees received various gifts, including food packs, cash, gift checks, and other items. Adding to the festivities, Vice President Duterte actively participated in games and raffles alongside comedians and event hosts, creating a lively and engaging atmosphere.

Ensuring Safety and Order

To maintain peace and order, over 3,000 police personnel, supported by auxiliary forces, were deployed during the event. DCPO spokesperson Police Capt. Hazel Tuazon emphasized the importance of security measures, ensuring the safety of all participants in the traditional holiday gathering.

Messages of Hope and Gratitude

In a heartfelt Christmas message, former President Duterte reflected on the true essence of the season, expressing his hopes for peace, economic growth, and opportunities for all Filipinos, especially his fellow Davaoeños.

“In the spirit of Christmas, I hope everyone is feeling a bit better today than yesterday. May law and order continue, and at the very least, may peace in the community be upheld. Wishing every Filipino a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!” Duterte said.

The former leader also expressed profound gratitude to the crowd, acknowledging the unwavering support he has received throughout his political career. “Not only did you support and help me, but you also carried on my political aspirations through my children,” he said in the local dialect.
