EU Representatives Pay Courtesy Call to PRO BAR Regional Director

Camp BGen Salipada K. Pendatun, Parang, Maguindanao del Norte — A delegation from the European Union (EU), led by Mr. Fabrice André Marc Varielle, Deputy Head of Mission for Democracy and Election Observation, paid a courtesy call on Police Brigadier General (PBGEN) Romeo J. Macapaz, Regional Director of the Police Regional Office – Bangsamoro Autonomous Region (PRO BAR), on November 15, 2024. The meeting was held at the PRO BAR Lounge in Camp BGen Salipada K. Pendatun, situated in Parang, Maguindanao del Norte.

The purpose of the visit was to strengthen collaboration between the EU and local law enforcement agencies, especially in preparation for the upcoming electoral process. During the courtesy call, the EU representatives were briefed on the current crime and security situation in the region, a presentation led by PBGEN Macapaz and his team.

The briefing provided an in-depth overview of the security landscape in the Bangsamoro region, highlighting efforts to ensure a peaceful and secure environment during the election period. The EU team was particularly focused on issues related to crime prevention, public safety, and maintaining order during the elections.

In his remarks, PBGEN Macapaz underscored the commitment of the Philippine National Police (PNP) in ensuring a smooth, safe, and orderly electoral process within the region. He emphasized that proactive measures are being taken to address potential security threats and ensure the integrity of the elections.

Mr. Varielle, on behalf of the European Union, reiterated the EU’s steadfast support for the democratic process in the Philippines. He emphasized that the EU’s involvement in election monitoring and support is part of its broader goal to promote transparency, security, and democratic principles in the Bangsamoro region. The EU’s participation underscores its commitment to helping the Philippines safeguard the integrity of its electoral system, particularly during this critical time for the region.

Both parties expressed optimism for a successful partnership, committed to fostering a peaceful, transparent, and secure electoral environment in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region.

The meeting is seen as an important step in reinforcing international cooperation to ensure that the electoral process in the region is conducted fairly and peacefully, with the goal of furthering democracy and stability in Mindanao.
