45th Infantry “Gallant” Battalion Enhances Community Safety with Coordinative Meeting and MOU Signing with BLGUs

Ungkaya Pukan, Basilan – On October 12, 2024, the 45th Infantry “Gallant” Battalion, led by LTC Michael P. Colanta, INF GSC PA, took a significant step in promoting community safety through a successful coordinative meeting and Stakeholder’s Appreciation Day. The event, held in partnership with the Barangay Local Government Units (BLGUs) of the municipalities of Sumisip, Ungkaya Pukan, Tipo-Tipo, and Al-Barka, focused on strengthening military-local government collaboration.

One of the key highlights of the event was the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) aimed at regulating firearm transport and uniform use. The signing, which was witnessed by representatives from the Philippine National Police (PNP) and Joint Peace and Security Team (JPST) of Sumisip and Tipo-Tipo, underscored a collective effort to reduce the proliferation of illegal firearms and promote peace in the community. The MOU also includes provisions limiting firearm possession for members of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) and Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF), and it imposes restrictions on unauthorized individuals wearing military and police uniforms.

The event received widespread support from the Association of Barangay Captains (ABC) Presidents of the four municipalities, who expressed their gratitude and commitment to maintaining peace in Basilan. Their collective message emphasized a shared goal of a peaceful and progressive community.

LTC Colanta underscored the importance of the agreement, stating that the close collaboration between military and local government units forms the foundation for a safer, more secure community. He added that this partnership is crucial for promoting lasting peace in Basilan, where joint efforts can lead to a peaceful environment for all residents.

The initiative reflects a broader strategy to ensure safety and security in Basilan, focusing on cooperation, regulatory measures, and shared responsibility among government forces and local leaders.
